Carpet Care

The beauty of your carpet flooring can last for many years with proper care and maintenance. A good quality carpet can last from 10-15 years with regular vacuuming and cleaning. It can also be a lot simpler than you think. We have provided a few recommendations below that should help to keep your carpet looking like it did the day it was installed.

Carpet Cleaning

Keeping dirt and grime out of your carpet will not only keep it looking clean but will also decrease the wear and tear on it. Keeping the dirt out of the carpet reduces the abrasive forces that break down the fiber and backing of carpet. Therefore proper regular vacuuming can help to increase you carpet's lifetime. We recommend the following:

  1. Vacuum daily in high-traffic or pet areas.
  2. Vacuum twice weekly in medium-traffic areas.
  3. Vacuum weekly in light-traffic areas, using attachments at carpet edges

Spot Cleaning

Everyone knows that no matter how hard you try, something is either spilled or tracked through the house that can leave a stain. Eventhough almost all carpets have some kind of stain resistant protection, a spill that is not taken care of quickly may permanently stain your carpet. Therefore it is imperative that any spills or accidents be cleaned up immediately. Here is what we recommend.

STEP 1: Absorb the Spill

  • Blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels (no prints or colors). Use of a printed or colored material may transfer ink or dye to your damp carpet.
  • Start at the outside of the spot and continue toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading. Continue step one until the area is barely damp. Semisolids, like food spills, may need to be scooped up with a spoon. Solid, dried bits can be vacuumed up. Warning: do not scrub or use a brush. Scrubbing and brushes can damage the carpet.  Fraying and texture change is the likely result.

STEP 2: Treat the Stain or Spill

  • Use a CRI-approved carpet cleaning product.  Though these have been laboratory tested, you should still pretest any cleaner on a scrap of carpet or in a hidden area of your carpet.
  • Follow the product's directions carefully.  Apply a small amount of the cleaner to a white cloth and work in gently, from the edges to the center.  Blot; don't scrub.  Never use a brush.  You may need to do this several times to remove the spot.

When cleaning stains and spills, don't become overzealous. Mix the cleaning solutions according to the directions. In truth, more is not better. Don't use too much water; try to keep the carpet as dry as possible. And always remember to pretest the product on an inconspicuous spot of carpet.

Professional Cleaning

A carpets lifetime can be extended by regular deep cleaning done by a professional. The key to good looking carpets year after year depends on this fact. For most of our products we recommend a hot water extraction system annually for cleaning your carpets but be sure to consult your warranty for its cleaning requirements. Our company recommends our partner DC Restoration.
